Important information regarding unpaid opportunities

Fair Work Report 2013

In light of a report commissioned on behalf of the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO), Curtin Careers, Employment & Leadership has worked closely with the FWO and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that its services fully comply with the Fair Work Act 2009. We have therefore amended some of our work experience practices and services to ensure full compliance with the recommendations of the report and the FWO.

Organisations looking to offer Work Experience opportunities to Curtin students are encouraged to offer whenever possible a wage in line with relevant minimum wage regulations.

Unpaid 'Work Experience'

There are many different forms of unpaid experience for students and many remain acceptable in line with the Fair Work Act.

Employers are encouraged to read the latest information on the Fair Work web site: Fair Work Act - Unpaid work

Acceptable unpaid opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Vocational (Curricular) Placements (an assessed requirement of a student's studies)
  • Volunteering Opportunities in a not-for-profit / charitable organisation
  • Co-Curricular or unpaid work experience opportunities with a largely observational basis

Further information can be found on our webpage - Work Experience

Submitted opportunities that we believe are exploitative of our students and graduates, or which breach the terms of the Fair Work Act will be rejected from the system.
